Our Work

As 2010 draws to a close, it’s time to reflect, recognize and appreciate all those who played a part in our success not only this year, but in years gone by, too. It is by “living united” that we will reach our goal of overcoming challenges by addressing the underlying causes. Everyone wins when a child succeeds in school, when families become financially stable, and when people are kept healthy.
The journey toward Community Impact Funding began in 2009 when counties identified their #1 priorities and culminated in the execution of contracts aimed at providing resolutions. Allegany County’s contract aims to reduce homelessness in the county. Garrett, Hampshire and Mineral counties contracts aim to provide before/after school and summer programs that will reduce the dropout rates. It is through these collaborative efforts that each county strives to build stronger communities in the key areas of: education, income and health.
Our fourth annual Community Caring Awards dinner was held in August. Numerous citizens and businesses demonstrate long-term commitment to the United Way by volunteering and making positive contributions that benefit our communities. Individuals receiving awards were: Tom Dowdell for Allegany County, Steve Lantz, Janet Marsh and Cindy Wall for Garrett County, Dr. Linda DeChambeau in Hampshire County and Charlotte Hott for Mineral County. The four businesses receiving the award were: Martins in Allegany County, Sincell Publishing in Garrett County, The Hampshire Center in Hampshire County and Carl Belt, Inc. in Mineral County. Congratulations and thank you for all you have done and continue to do in making our communities better places to live and work!
As the economy continues in a state of flux, our county campaign managers strive to reach goals. Sara Beth James and Mark Sullivan in Allegany, Garrett County’s Executive Committee, Holly Cowie in Hampshire and Kay Vaughan in Mineral County have all made outstanding efforts to accomplish the task this year. Looking toward the future, it has become clear that finding sustainable revenue sources will be important to our future success.
It does not “just happen” that County United Way’s endeavors are successful year after year. Mary Beth Pirolozzi, executive director, works tirelessly to ensure our success. She and her staff, Michele Walker and Linda Toey, are key in providing support to our agencies, Board of Directors, Executive Committees and campaigns. Thank you for another great year – you are appreciated!
Of course, it takes more than contracts and a fantastic staff to make our County United Way successful. It takes County United Way volunteers, committee chairs and members, campaign chairs and volunteers, agency leaders, supporters and friends. We know you are out there and very much appreciate all you do to help our communities Live United!
